IFS Therapy For Intellectualizers
Have you ever felt like an expert at intellectualizing your problems, but notice yourself struggling to connect to your body or deeper emotions? This is something I often see with high-functioning, insightful people who feel disconnected from parts of themselves despite years of self-awareness or personal growth work.
You may know why you feel the way you do, yet still find yourself stuck in the same emotional patterns. Maybe you’ve tried talking through your struggles in therapy before, but found that insight alone didn’t create the deeper shift you were hoping for.
IFS therapy can help you move beyond intellectualizing and reconnect with the emotions, body sensations, and protective patterns that often exist outside conscious awareness. Through a somatic, experiential approach, we’ll work together to build greater clarity, self-trust, and internal connection—allowing lasting change to happen from the inside out. Here’s what you can expect when working together:
Bringing Awareness to Our Bodies (Find)
We begin by slowing down and increasing awareness of your body and internal world. Maybe you come into session feeling frustrated by a relationship pattern that you intellectually understand but still can’t seem to shift. We’ll start by noticing the sensations and feelings in your body as you sit with this frustration. I’ll then guide you in checking out if there are other parts around and how you notice them. Maybe you notice tension in your chest, a pit in your stomach, or a choked up feeling in your throat.
Focus In
We’ll then choose a part to focus on and notice how it feels to put your attention towards it.
Flesh Out
I’ll then guide you in noticing how you see or experience this part. What does it look like? What kind of energy does it have? How old is it?
Feel Toward
Then you’ll notice how you feel toward this part. This helps us separate from the part so you can relate to it from a more present, open, and curious place (what IFS calls “Self-energy”). As we do this, intellectualizing parts often show up too—usually trying to find the “right” answer or stay in control. Instead of pushing these parts away, we’ll acknowledge them with compassion and gently help them step back so deeper work can unfold.
Befriend
From here, you’ll learn more about the part. What does it want to tell you about why it’s there? What good intentions does it hold? What job has it taken on? How long has it been around? In IFS, we understand that every part has a purpose—even the ones that keep you stuck in overthinking, overworking, shutting down, or self-criticism.
Fears
Next we’ll learn about this part’s fears and what it worries might happen if it steps back from its role. Often, this leads us toward younger or more vulnerable parts that need support, healing, and care.
Moving Beyond Insight
This approach helps us to shift from a state of thinking to a state of being—sitting with and feeling present in the moment with our bodies and emotions. By slowing down and noticing what comes up with openness and curiosity, we are able to find relief faster and with more ease, though this may seem counterintuitive to your intellectualizing parts that believe they need to solve the problem. If this resonates with you, I invite you to reach out to schedule a consultation. I’d love to support you.
